The Drents Museum in Assen, Netherlands, is currently showing the great international exhibition “MAYA, RULERS OF THE RAINFOREST”, which is open to the public from February 28 to September 4, 2016. Afterwards it will travel to the Historisches Museum der Pfalz in Speyer, Germany, to be seen from October 2, 2016 to April 23, 2017. Most of the exhibits on loan come from Guatemala, mainly from La Ruta Maya Foundation and The National Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology MUNAE (both in Guatemala City), as well as some objects from the “Dr. Juan Antonio Valdés” Museum/ Herrera Collection (Uaxactún, Petén). The exhibition also features various objects from the Ethnologisches Museum (Berlin), the Rautenstrauch-Joest-Museum (Cologne) and other museums.
This exhibition about the Maya is a real voyage of discovery of the mysterious Mayan culture through its impressive treasures and tries to answer several questions based on the latest advances in archaeological research. To achieve this, the Drents Museum is working closely with leading Mayanist experts such as Dr. Nikolai Grube of Bonn, Germany, and the Historisches Museum der Pfalz (Historical Museum of the Palatinate) in Speyer, Germany.
The main themes of the exhibition are the Maya and their environment, culture and Mayan society and the development and collapse of the city-states of the Classic period. The Drents Museum Assen and the Historisches Museum der Pfalz are among the largest and most renowned museums in Europe, with high scientific standards and museum concepts. Both museums record an annual visitation of over 250,000 visitors. Given their experience- but also to their facilities and staff- both museums are well prepared to offer a suitable platform for the fascinating exhibition entitled “Maya Rulers of the Rainforest”. The exhibition fits the current policy of all the particopants to stage exhibitions on archaeology to the general public.
