The Cancuén Panel, under the custody of the La Ruta Maya Foundation (Cultural Property Registration No. 16.2.5.244), currently exhibited at the Exhibition “MAYA: Das Rätsel der Königsstädte” at the Historisches Museum der Pfalz in Speyer (Germany), was digitally documented in order to create 3D images.
This action is part of the “Mayan Classic Text and Dictionary Database” Project of Bonn University (www.mayadictionary.de) led by Professor Nikolai Grube and coordinated by Dr. Christian Prager.
The documentation is made using a Breuckmann Smartscan C5 high resolution, light structured scanner, documenting in three dimensions. The no-contact scanning process allows a careful and risk-free handling of cultural heritage, generating at the same time 3-D data with sub-pixel precision and high-resolution color textures that allow a careful study of the monument without altering the original.
During their work at the museum, a film crew accompanied the research team and filmed part of the process, which was broadcasted in German TV. The SWR report appears at minute 22:55 in the following link:
