La Ruta Maya obtains many of the pieces abroad by means of donations and other means and then requests the authorization to import them back to Guatemala through the Dirección General del Patrimonio Cultural y Natural, the Ministry of Culture and Sports, and the customs’ division of the SAT in the Ministry of Public Finances.

Some of the pieces in the collection have been professionally restored according to their needs, and this repair and its results are documented with descriptions and photographs in the data cards belonging to said pieces.
