La Ruta Maya Conservation Foundation was founded as a non- profit organization 501(c)(3) the 25 of October 1990 in accordance to the laws of the state of Virginia, United States of America.

In Guatemala, La Ruta Maya is a private organization established in accordance to the Guatemalan laws as a non-profit organization registered at the Ministry of Governance as La Ruta Maya- ONG on the month of November 2007. Steps have been taken to register it as a foundation before the same government department.
